The recipe for effective food education: Auburn South Primary School offers the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program to all students in Years 3-6.

The children then set the table and the class enjoys a wholesome meal together that they have prepared from scratch. Students learn to build and maintain a garden according to organic principles, and to grow and harvest a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs.

As a result our garden has flourished and provides much of the produce we use in our cooking. In 2017, a working part made up of Westgarth staff and parents undertook an extensive review of the program in terms of curriculum provision, finances and volunteerism. Parents, Grandparents and Community Members are all welcome. This project commenced in 2001. The garden and kitchen provide a real-life context for learning, which interweaves the theories and practices behind growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh, seasonal foods. Our Kitchen Garden Program has been made possible as a result of a grant from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation and the dedication of staff and parents at Rowville Primary School. Throughout the year our children in guided by our garden specialist, Mick and our wonderful volunteers, have busily and enthusiastically planted, cared for and harvested a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs. The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation takes a revolutionary approach to food education, focusing on pleasure, flavour and fun via the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Our kitchen volunteers regularly comment on how great it is to see, and appreciate just what young children are capable of when it comes to the preparation and enjoyment of good food. In the kitchen, students explore and prepare a range of delicious dishes from the seasonal produce they’ve grown.

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) program has been running at Westgarth Primary School since 2007. An abundant vegetable garden is created within the school grounds to provide edible, aromatic and beautiful produce for the school kitchen. The shared meal is a time for students and staff to enjoy the fruits of their labour, and each other’s company and interaction.

The finished meal is arranged with pride and care on tables set with flowers from the garden. Margaret River Primary School is proudly a member of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation which now has a membership in excess of 800 schools across Australia. Spring is here and we are looking forward to harvesting the abundance of goodness growing in the garden. This term we welcome Year Three into the NMPS kitchen for the first time and we are excited to introduce them to program. Here at Golden Beach State School, our program is designed to get children gardening and cooking in order to teach them about the joys and benefits of freshly grown food. It provides them with the knowledge to make healthy food choices which will benefit them for years to come.
